Understanding how Immigration New Zealand processes your application helps you prepare better and avoid unnecessary delays.
How INZ Processes Applications
INZ checks that you meet the criteria per immigration instructions, verifies you are a legitimate applicant, confirms document authenticity, and verifies relationships for family visas. They may request additional photographs, medical examination reports, or even a personal interview.
PPI Letters
If INZ identifies concerns, they may issue a Potentially Prejudicial Information letter. You must respond quickly and thoroughly — this is your opportunity to address concerns before a final decision.
Offshore vs Onshore Applications
If you are applying from outside New Zealand, INZ is not obligated to request additional information before reaching a decision. It is your responsibility to provide all supporting information upfront.
How to Avoid Delays
- Include all required documents — originals, certified copies, photocopies
- Submit English translations for all foreign-language documents
- Plan ahead with your long-term immigration goals in mind
- Apply at least 2 weeks before your existing visa expires
