A Historical Perspective on Immigration to New Zealand

ProVisas Team |

New Zealand’s history is fundamentally a story of migration. From the arrival of Polynesian navigators who became the Maori people, to the waves of European settlers in the 19th century, to the diverse global migration of today, immigration has shaped every aspect of the country’s culture, economy, and identity. Understanding this history provides valuable context for anyone considering making New Zealand their home.

The first migrants to New Zealand were Polynesian voyagers who arrived around 1250-1300 AD, navigating vast ocean distances using the stars, ocean currents, and traditional knowledge. These settlers established the Maori culture that remains a foundational part of New Zealand’s identity. European contact began in the late 18th century, and organised British settlement increased significantly after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. Gold rushes in the 1860s brought Chinese migrants, while Pacific Island migration grew substantially in the mid-20th century.

Immigration policy has evolved significantly over New Zealand’s history. The country moved from restrictive policies that favoured British migrants to a skills-based system that welcomes qualified people from all backgrounds. Major reforms in the 1980s and 1990s shifted the focus to attracting skilled migrants who could contribute to the economy, a philosophy that continues to underpin today’s immigration settings. The points-based Skilled Migrant Category and the employer-led Accredited Employer Work Visa are modern expressions of this approach.

Today, New Zealand is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world, with residents born in over 200 countries. Auckland is one of the most multicultural cities globally, with significant communities from across Asia, the Pacific, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. This diversity is celebrated as a strength, and new migrants continue to contribute to the ongoing story of New Zealand’s development.
