Rules Change for International Students in New Zealand

As of July 1st, 2022, the process for international students applying for visas to study in New Zealand has changed. The government will no longer offer additional points for most qualifications completed in NZ, making it harder for students to obtain residence.

Students who have applied for visas starting 11 May 2022 will be subject to a variety of changes in post-study rights and fund requirements. These are:

  • Most students will only be eligible for post-study work after they have completed their studies in NZ for up to three years. Master's and Ph.D students will not be eligible for the same three-year period
  • Only those who have completed 30 weeks of NZ study will be eligible for post-study work rights
  •  If the study area is related to Green List, then you will be eligible for post study rights
  • International students at tertiary level will require $20,000 per year starting 31 July 2022 to support themselves and $17,000 additionally per annum for school going students.This figure is in addition to annual tuition fees
  • Students who apply for post-study rights must prove that they have at least $5,000 of available funds
  • Every three years, the fund's requirements will be reviewed

Students will have the opportunity to apply for Accredited Employer Work Visas. This visa will be granted if they meet the requirements of the job. The student must also be qualified and experienced.

Those who do not meet these requirements will have to leave New Zealand after their studies.
