    What is 8 + 3 ?

The New Zealand government has just announced significant changes to the work rights of partners of migrant workers, providing more flexibility for families and supporting businesses by addressing skill shortages in key sectors. Starting from 2 December 2024, these updates will open up greater work opportunities for the partners of Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) and Essential Skills Visa holders.

At Professional Visa Solutions, we’re here to help you navigate these new pathways and secure your future in New Zealand.

What You Need to Know About the New Open Work Rights:

These changes will allow the partners of migrant workers to work for any employer, offering more freedom and stability. Here’s what will be available:

    1. For Partners of AEWV Holders:
      • Partners of workers in ANZSCO Level 1-3 roles earning at least NZD$25.29/hour (80% of the median wage) will now have open work rights.
      • Partners of workers earning the same rate who were supporting a partner for a work visa on 26 June 2024 will also qualify.
    2. For Partners of Essential Skills Visa Holders:
      • Open work rights are extended to partners of Essential Skills work visa holders earning NZD$25.29/hour or more.
    3. For Partners of AEWV Holders in ANZSCO Level 4-5 Roles:
      • Open work rights are available to partners of workers earning at least NZD$47.41/hour (150% of the median wage).
      • Partners can also qualify if the AEWV holder earns NZD$31.61/hour in a Green List role or NZD$25.29/hour in roles within the Transport or Care Sector Agreements, provided the requirements are met.

    What Is ANZSCO?

ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) defines the skill levels of different occupations, ranging from Level 1 (high-skilled) to Level 5 (low-skilled). Why This Change Matters

    • Supporting Families: More partners can work without being restricted to specific employers or sectors, meaning families can stay together and thrive in New Zealand.
    • Filling Skill Gaps: This policy will help fill vital roles across New Zealand, particularly in industries like healthcare, transport, and essential services.
    • Attracting Talent: Offering more flexible work rights makes New Zealand an attractive option for both high-skilled workers and their families.

    What You Need to Do

If your partner meets any of the above criteria, they will be able to apply for a new work visa or variation of conditions from 2 December 2024. Current holders of partner work visas with restricted employment conditions will also be eligible to switch to open work rights.
