1. Eligibility for Students Progressing from a PGDip to a Master’s Degree

If you’ve completed a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) of 30 weeks and then immediately pursued a Master’s degree, you are now eligible for a Post Study Work Visa (PSWV) based on your PGDip. This applies even if you didn’t meet the 30-week minimum study duration for your Master’s degree.

This change recognizes the hard work of students following consecutive qualifications and ensures they can remain eligible to work after their studies.

2. Timeline to Apply for PSWV

Students who complete an eligible qualification, then immediately pursue a higher-level qualification (which may not qualify for a PSWV due to study duration requirements), now have 12 months from the end date of their student visa for the initial qualification to apply for a PSWV.

3. Duration of PSWV

To qualify for a 3-year PSWV, students must:

• Complete at least 30 weeks of full-time study in New Zealand, specifically enrolled in their Master’s degree.

What Qualifications Are Eligible for a PSWV?

To be eligible, you must:

• Hold a New Zealand qualification studied full-time for the required minimum duration.
• Apply for a PSWV within the set timeframe after completing your studies.

New Additions to the PSWV Eligibility List

To better align with the Green List and New Zealand’s workforce needs, these qualifications have been added or updated:

1. Secondary School Teachers:
   • Applicants no longer require a Bachelor’s degree specializing in Science, Mathematics, Technology, or Pacific Languages to qualify for PSWV.
2. Primary or Intermediate School Teachers:
   • Graduate Diploma holders who meet the Teaching Council’s registration requirements are now eligible for a PSWV.
3. Mechanical Engineering Technicians:
   • The New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (Level 6) with a strand in Mechanical Engineering is now on the PSWV eligibility list.
