From 16 November 2026, international students in New Zealand get two new post-study options (immigration.govt.nz). A new Short-term Graduate Work Visa gives 6 months of open work rights to graduates of NZQCF Level 5 to 7 qualifications who are not eligible for the Post Study Work Visa, and the Post Study Work Visa itself opens to Level 7 graduate diploma holders who also hold a bachelor’s degree. Both changes reward planning and punish assumptions, because each carries a once-per-lifetime rule and a short application window.
A 6-month open work visa for graduates whose qualification does not reach the Post Study Work Visa threshold. Announced on 29 May 2026 and open for applications from 16 November 2026, it is designed as a job-search bridge: six months to find employment that can support the next visa, most commonly an Accredited Employer Work Visa.

The 6 months are for converting a qualification into a job. Treat the clock as the whole point: a graduate who starts the job search after the visa is granted has already spent part of it.
Graduates who complete a Level 7 graduate diploma in New Zealand and also hold a bachelor’s degree, completed in New Zealand or overseas with no time limit on when it was awarded. The graduate diploma must be studied full time in New Zealand for its whole duration, with no cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning, and the resulting PSWV runs for up to 1 year with open work conditions.
This is the change with the bigger residence implications. An offshore bachelor’s holder can now complete a 1-year graduate diploma in New Zealand and walk out with a year of open work rights, a pathway that previously required a full further degree. The Post Study Work Visa’s once-per-lifetime rule still applies, so the year needs to be used deliberately.

One sequencing note for current students: if you finish a Level 5 to 7 qualification before 16 November 2026 and your student visa expires more than 3 months before that date, the window for the new visa never opens for you. Where the timing is close, how long you remain lawfully in New Zealand after study becomes the deciding factor, and that is worth professional advice before your student visa expires, not after.
A 6-month open work visa opening 16 November 2026 for graduates of NZQCF Level 5 to 7 qualifications studied full time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks who are not eligible for the Post Study Work Visa. It is granted once per lifetime, cannot be extended, and must be applied for within 3 months of the student visa expiring.
From 16 November 2026, graduates who complete a Level 7 graduate diploma full time in New Zealand, with no cross-crediting, and who also hold a bachelor’s degree completed in New Zealand or overseas. The bachelor’s has no time limit on when it was awarded. The resulting visa runs up to 1 year with open work conditions.
No, and the reverse ordering is the design: the short-term visa exists for graduates who are not eligible for the Post Study Work Visa. Each visa is once per lifetime, so a graduate who qualifies for the PSWV should use it; the 6-month visa is the fallback for qualifications below the PSWV threshold.
No. The Short-term Graduate Work Visa cannot support a partner’s work visa or a child’s dependent student visa. It also does not permit self-employment or owning a business; you must work as an employee under an employment agreement. Families needing longer arrangements should plan around the Post Study Work Visa or an Accredited Employer Work Visa instead.
