The Pathway Student Visa is one of the most-searched study visas for New Zealand, but it is also one of the most misunderstood. It is a specialised study visa, not the standard route into study here. This guide explains what it actually is, who can use it, and the study-to-work pathway that suits most international students.
What the Pathway Student Visa is
The Pathway Student Visa lets you study up to three programmes of study, one after another, on a single visa for up to five years. Instead of applying for a new student visa each time you move to the next course, a linked “study pathway” with a participating provider is covered by one visa.
Not all education providers offer it. You can only apply if you have an offer for a valid study pathway from a provider that participates, so this visa is only relevant if your chosen provider is on Immigration New Zealand’s (INZ) list of pathway education providers. The application fee starts from NZD $750, and applications are submitted online, as INZ no longer accepts paper applications for this visa.
Because the participating-provider list can change, always confirm the current providers and requirements on INZ’s official page before relying on this visa: Pathway Student Visa, immigration.govt.nz.
Who can apply
To be eligible you generally need to:
- Have an offer for a valid study pathway from a participating pathway education provider (or providers)
- Show sufficient funds for tuition and living costs
- Hold acceptable medical and travel insurance for the length of your stay (PhD students are exempt)
- Meet INZ’s health, character, and genuine-intentions requirements
If your chosen provider does not offer it, the Pathway Student Visa is not available to you, and a standard student visa is the route.
How it differs from a standard student visa
A standard student visa generally covers one programme with one provider. The Pathway Student Visa is designed for students who already know they will study a sequence of linked courses (for example a foundation programme, then a diploma, then a degree) with a participating provider, and who want one visa to cover the whole pathway rather than reapplying at each step.
For most international students, who are enrolling in a single qualification, the standard student visa is simpler and more appropriate.
The route most students take: study, then work
The pathway that leads somewhere for most students is study followed by work. After completing an eligible qualification in New Zealand, you may be able to apply for a post-study work visa, which lets you work for an accredited employer and build the New Zealand experience that can later support a residence application.
From there, the main skilled-residence route is the Skilled Migrant Category, a points-based system, and some in-demand occupations have a more direct pathway through the Green List. If residence is your long-term goal, it is worth understanding that route before you choose where and what to study, because your qualification and occupation shape what is realistic later.
What to prepare
Whichever student visa applies to you, the common requirements take lead time:
- Offer of place from your education provider (and, for the Pathway Student Visa, a valid study pathway from a participating provider)
- Evidence of funds for tuition and living costs
- Medical and travel insurance for the period of study
- English language evidence where required by your provider or visa
- Health and character requirements, which can include a medical examination and police certificates
Student visa work rights and conditions change from time to time, so check the current conditions on immigration.govt.nz for your specific visa.
