What is the difference between an immigration adviser and an immigration consultant?
In New Zealand, only the term licensed immigration adviser means anything legally. Under the Immigration Advisers Licensing Act 2007 it is an offence to give New Zealand immigration advice without a licence from the Immigration Advisers Authority, unless you fall inside a listed exemption such as being a New Zealand lawyer. The Act covers advice given "whether or not for gain or reward", so even free advice from an unlicensed person is caught.
Words like consultant, agent, and adviser without the word licensed are not regulated. Anyone can print them on a business card. That is why the practical test is not the job title but the licence number, which you can check yourself for free on the Immigration Advisers Authority public register before you pay anyone anything.
A licence also brings obligations that protect you: a written agreement setting out the work and the fee before it starts, client money handled properly, and a complaints route to the Authority itself if something goes wrong. Our own complaints procedure is published for that reason.

Do you meet in person or online?
Both. Auckland clients often prefer to come into Manukau or Papakura, particularly for a first conversation or when there are original documents to go through. Everything can equally be handled by video call and phone, and a good share of our clients are outside Auckland or outside New Zealand entirely.
Either way, documents are exchanged through a secure portal and your file is handled by a named licensed adviser, so an online case is worked to the same standard as one where you sit across the desk.
How do you choose the right immigration adviser in Auckland?
Every firm will tell you it is the best one, so the useful thing is a list of checks you can actually run before you commit. These four are worth applying to us as much as to anyone else.
- Check the licence is current. Ask for the number and search the IAA public register. It shows whether the licence is full or provisional and any conditions on it. An unlicensed person giving New Zealand immigration advice is committing an offence, and you have far less protection if the case goes wrong.
- Get the fee in writing before you pay. The Code of Conduct requires a written agreement setting out the work and the cost. If a firm will not put the total in writing up front, that is the answer to your question.
- Ask who actually handles your file. Support staff can help with administration, but the advice itself has to come from a licensed adviser. You should be told the name of yours.
- Listen for the weak points. Any honest assessment of an immigration case includes what is working against it. An adviser who only tells you what you want to hear is not doing the job, and no one can promise you a particular outcome from Immigration New Zealand.
