Post-Study Work Visa Changes — November 2024

INZ updated PSWV rules effective 19 November 2024 — more flexibility for students pursuing consecutive qualifications, three new field categories added, and clearer 3-year-duration eligibility.

Immigration New Zealand implemented updates to the Post Study Work Visa effective 19 November 2024, designed to provide more flexibility for international students while aligning PSWV eligibility with workforce needs.

Key changes

PGDip → Master’s progression

Students completing a 30-week Postgraduate Diploma before pursuing a Master’s degree now qualify for PSWV based on their PGDip, even if their Master’s doesn’t meet the 30-week requirement on its own. This removes a barrier that previously penalised students for continuing their education through the PGDip → Master’s pathway.

Extended application timeline

Applicants now have 12 months from their initial student visa end date to apply for PSWV when pursuing consecutive qualifications. This gives more breathing room during the transition from study to work.

3-year PSWV duration eligibility

To qualify for the full three-year PSWV, students must complete at least 30 weeks of full-time Master’s degree study in New Zealand.

Expanded eligibility

Three field categories were added under the November 2024 update:

  • Secondary teachers — no longer need specialised Bachelor’s degrees in science, mathematics, technology, or Pacific languages
  • Primary and intermediate teachers — those with Graduate Diplomas meeting Teaching Council standards now qualify
  • Mechanical engineering technicians — Level 6 NZ Diploma in Engineering (Mechanical strand) holders are now eligible

What this means for you

These changes are positive for international students planning multi-year study pathways. If you’re currently studying or planning to study in New Zealand, understanding how the November 2024 changes affect your specific post-study work visa pathway is important — particularly the PGDip-then-Master’s sequence and the 12-month application window.
