What changed since the last snapshot

This is the first edition of the tracker, so it sets the baseline. From the next monthly update, this section records the movers: categories that sped up, slowed down, or crossed a planning threshold, with the size of the move. That month-on-month delta is the number that matters for planning, and it is the one INZ’s weekly pages cannot show you, because they only ever display the current 4-week window.

How INZ’s processing figures actually work

Five things about the method stop most misreadings:

• They are percentiles, not promises. “Average” means half of recent applications were decided within that time; “most completed within” means 80% were. One in five applications takes longer than the larger figure.
• They measure the recent past, not your future. Each figure covers applications processed in the previous 4 weeks and is refreshed weekly, so a surge or a policy change shows up in the numbers only after it has already happened.
• Working days, not calendar days. A “2 week” figure spans public holidays and weekends in calendar terms.
• Season matters. INZ receives its highest volumes between November and March, with visitor applications peaking October to February and student applications November to March. Figures drift out during those windows.
• Third-party dependencies run past the headline. Applications waiting on police certificates, qualification assessments or medical referrals routinely exceed the published figures, whatever the category; our guide to how INZ processes applications explains those mechanics.

How to use these numbers for planning

Plan to the 80% figure, not the average, and add margin for anything with a third-party dependency. Lodge before your current visa expires so an interim visa covers the gap if you are onshore. And remember there is no paid fast-track: completeness at submission is the only lever applicants control, and INZ’s escalation route exists only for compelling circumstances, not travel bookings.

Why is my visa taking longer than the published time?

The published figure is a percentile over the last 4 weeks, so 20% of applications always take longer than the “most completed within” number. The usual causes of a longer wait are third-party dependencies (police certificates, qualification assessments, medical referrals), incomplete documents at submission, seasonal volume between November and March, and verification of information INZ wants to check.

How often is this tracker updated?

Monthly. ProVisas re-pulls INZ’s published wait-time pages, updates the tables, and records the month-on-month movers in the “what changed” section.
